The arithmetic

Where your CTC actually goes

CTC stands for cost to company. It is the total an employer spends on you, which is not the same as the total you are paid. Two things inside it never reach your monthly account.

The first is the employer’s provident fund contribution, which goes into your PF account rather than your bank. The second is the gratuity provision, roughly 4.81 percent of basic salary, which you only receive if you complete five years of continuous service. Remove both and you have your gross salary.

From gross, three deductions apply: your own PF contribution, professional tax levied by your state, and income tax. What is left is your in-hand pay. The old rule of thumb that in-hand is 60 to 70 percent of CTC is now out of date: under the new tax regime, income up to ₹12 lakh attracts no tax at all, so a package below that threshold can return close to 90 percent. The proportion falls as tax begins to apply, reaching roughly 75 percent on a ₹50 lakh package.

The other driver is the variable component, and it is worth checking on any offer. Two packages with the same headline CTC can differ substantially in monthly pay if one carries a large annual bonus and the other does not.

Comparing two offers?

Run both through the calculator using each offer letter’s actual basic percentage and variable component. The headline numbers frequently rank the offers differently from the monthly ones. Our salary insights cover how to negotiate from there.

Salary questions

How CTC and take-home actually work

Start with CTC and remove the parts that never reach you: employer provident fund and the gratuity provision. That gives gross salary. From gross, deduct employee PF, professional tax and income tax. What remains is your in-hand pay. Under the new tax regime that is roughly 90 percent of CTC on a package below the rebate threshold, falling toward 75 percent as income tax starts to bite on larger packages.

CTC is what you cost your employer, not what you are paid. It includes both PF contributions, a gratuity provision you only receive after five years, and often a variable component paid annually rather than monthly. None of that appears in your monthly bank credit.

Gross salary is your pay before employee deductions but after employer contributions have been removed from CTC. Net salary, also called in-hand or take-home, is what reaches your account after employee PF, professional tax and income tax.

Employees contribute 12 percent of basic salary, matched by the employer. Most employers apply the statutory wage ceiling of ₹15,000 a month, which caps the deduction at ₹1,800 a month. Some calculate on full basic instead, which increases the deduction and reduces take-home.

It is an estimate. It uses the new tax regime with the standard deduction and excludes HRA and 80C style exemptions, employer NPS, insurance recoveries and joining bonuses. Your actual figure depends on your offer letter, your state and your declarations.
